Fiestas

From the 9th to the 13th of May, one of the oldest and most unique Moors and Christians Festivals in the whole of eastern Valencia is held every year in Biar. These are the town’s big days par excellence.

Another singular and characteristic event is the "Descent of the Virgin", carried on the shoulders of the people of Biar from the sanctuary on the night of the 10th of May, with the lighting of hundreds of bonfires in the mountains surrounding the town. Another singular event is the measurement and subsequent dance of the Spies, which takes place on the afternoon of the 11th, and which ends with the arrival of the effigy of Mohammed at the castle installed in the Plaza for the embassies. This is another important event in these festivities. It is a mixture of representation and folklore. It symbolises how the Moorish troops in disguise tried to conquer the fortress.
