Almería (from the Andalusian Arabic المرية al-mariyya, and this from مرأى mara’à, meaning lookout or watchtower, because its initial function was to protect the city of Bayyana, now Pechina) is a Spanish coastal and port city, capital of the province of the same name in Andalusia. It is surrounded by the sierras of Gádor to the west, to the north by the sierra Alhamilla and to the east by a plain culminating in the sierra de Gata, with its famous Cabo de Gata (one of the corners of the Iberian peninsula), and to the south it opens out into a wide and beautiful bay. It is the capital of the coast of Almeria which stretches for 219 kms. It also holds the title of being the European capital with the most hours of sunshine per year, honouring an apt slogan that says Almeria, where the sun spends the winter.
